Shumon had notable career with New York City Police Department (NYPD) for over 21 years.
Shumon enjoyed helping people which lead him to joining the NYPD in 1999. During his carrier,
Shumon was first assigned to the 114th Precinct (PCT) as a Police Officer. 114th PCT consists of
diverse neighborhood which had a pocket of Bangladeshi community. He was the first Bangladeshi

a passion for investigation which lead to him to be selected by NYPD Intelligence Bureau in 2005
and earned his rank of Detective in 2007 by working on sensitive cases often involving cyber gangs.
When Shumon noticed that Bangladeshis are joining NYPD in record numbers, he knew that he had
to get involved and guide them since a career in law enforcement is very challenging. Shumon knew
that he had to attain higher ranks in NYPD to be the role model for recruits of Bangladeshi origins. In
2008, Shumon was one of the very first Bangladeshis to attain the rank of Sergeant. As a Sergeant,
he was the front-line supervisor of NYPD Public Service Area 9 which patrolled the housing
developments of entire Queens. Shumon earned a reputation in NYPD as a strong supervisor that
Intelligence Bureau once again accepted him to be their front-line supervisor.
Shumon faced many challenges in his career but turned them into educational tools for others.
Shumon was very eager to see success among his fellow Bangladeshi Americans in NYPD. To
assist them, in 2015, Shumon helped establish a first ever recognized fraternal organization, which
provided a platform for Bangladeshis in law enforcement in America. Shumon served as the
founding President of Bangladeshi American Police Association (BAPA). He directed BAPA to
assist its members to enhance their careers by attaining supervisory ranks or become Detectives.
He helped recruit more Bangladeshis into law enforcement and have Bangladeshi community work
closely with our law enforcement agencies. Shumon in 2020, was promoted to the rank of
Lieutenant which was his dream. Shumon is now retired from NYPD and is happily married with 4
children.
